Shared Vision for Nature, Community, and Healing
Celebrating South Downs National Park Authority Endorsement and Inviting You to Come on Our Journey.
We are delighted to share the news that the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) has formally endorsed the Westerlands Whole Estate Plan. This endorsement is not only an affirmation of our vision and values, but a shared commitment to a brighter, more sustainable future for people and nature at the heart of the South Downs. At Westerlands and Tegleaze, we are stewards of something larger than ourselves—a living landscape, a vibrant community and a promise to future generations.
Our Whole Estate Plan is guided by four pillars: Nature, Access, Community, and Healing. These are the foundations of everything we do, informing each decision and initiative as we strive to leave our land in a better state than we found it.
By 2045, our vision is for Westerlands to be recognised as a leading example of a regenerative, pasture-based livestock farming model—a place where innovative stewardship and thoughtful management lead to thriving habitats, flourishing wildlife and a community bound together by a shared belief in nature’s power to heal. Our definition of success is simple yet ambitious: a landscape rich in abundant biodiversity where wildlife, livestock, plants and people all thrive together and a community that is healthier, more connected and inspired by the natural wonders of the land.
This endorsement from the SDNPA is testament to years of careful planning, collaboration and a deep-rooted respect for the land and those who call it home. It is also a call to action. As our enterprise continues to evolve, we are expanding opportunities for people to reconnect with nature—whether through immersive experiences, educational programmes, or simply wandering our meadows under a canopy of stars. The dark skies of Westerlands have long been a source of wonder and peace, drawing stargazers and dreamers alike to witness the quiet majesty of the South Downs by night.
Our vision has been consciously underpinned by detailed action plans, allowing us to measure our progress against the four key pillars over time. We have already made some key, strategic steps in making the vision a reality – and as such, we’re proud to announce that we have been approved as an educational centre for delivering the transformational ‘Changing Lives Through Horses’ programme. From September 2025, we will be welcoming disengaged children and young adults to our Trekking Centre at Westerlands, where our qualified team of remarkable people and horses will empower and help them develop essential life skills through a range of equestrian-based activities.
On an international level, we embrace the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, actively working towards good health and wellbeing, responsible consumption, climate action and nurturing life on land. Our next commitment is to transition to a fully-fledged social enterprise: welcoming everyone, partnering with like-minded individuals and organisations and investing in a future where land and people flourish as one.
We invite you to visit, to experience the healing that only nature can provide and to join us on our journey. Whether you are a neighbour, a returning or first-time visitor, or simply passing through, there is a place for you at Westerlands. Walk our fields, rest beneath ancient trees, gaze at the stars and become part of a community that believes in the restoration of nature and the renewal of the human spirit.
Together, with the support of the SDNPA and all who walk our paths, we can create a legacy that will inspire and endure for generations. Join us on this journey—help us nurture, protect and celebrate the living heart of the South Downs.
