Blue Moon
Why It’s Special
A Blue Moon refers to the occurrence of a second full moon in a single calendar month. This rare event happens approximately once every 2–3 years. The next Blue Moon after May 2026 will occur on December 31, 2028. It’s important to note that the term "Blue Moon" doesn’t mean the moon will appear blue; it simply denotes this uncommon calendrical occurrence.
What You’ll Notice
At Westerlands, the Blue Moon will rise in the east at approximately 8.45pm, just after sunset. Its light will illuminate the landscape, casting soft shadows over fields and trees. The Moon’s subtle glow offers a serene and ethereal beauty, ideal for quiet reflection and appreciation of the late-spring countryside.
Folklore & Tradition
The name "Blue Moon" originates from the phrase "once in a blue moon," meaning something that happens very rarely. The modern definition of a Blue Moon as the second full moon in a calendar month was popularized in 1946 by amateur astronomer James Hugh Pruett. Historically, full moons were named for seasonal or natural events, but the Blue Moon has no traditional seasonal association. Its rarity has made it a symbol of unusual or extra abundance.
Seasonal Connection
Years that include a Blue Moon gave farmers an extra full moon of illumination, which could extend the working hours in the evening for late-season tasks, such as tending livestock, checking fences, or preparing early crops. This bonus full moon provided a valuable opportunity to accomplish chores that might otherwise be limited by shorter daylight or fewer full moons, acting as a natural “bonus” in the lunar calendar.
Tips for Viewers
At Westerlands, look east at 8.45pm to see the Blue Moon rise. The low-horizon amber glow is particularly beautiful against the backdrop of blooming flowers and vibrant spring fields. As it climbs higher, the Moon’s silvery light will illuminate the countryside, making it ideal for photography or quiet observation. Witnessing a Blue Moon allows you to experience a rare celestial event while appreciating how historically it offered practical advantages to rural life.
