7 December 2025
Welcome to our wreath making workshop in the heart of the Sussex countryside.
Guided by Lucie from Handmade Sussex, you’ll learn to create a beautiful, natural wreath using dried flowers and foliage foraged and grown sustainably from the local landscape. Rooted in seasonal creativity and a love of the wild, this workshop invites you to slow down, connect with nature, and craft something truly personal to bring the beauty of Sussex into your home.
Your host
We’re delighted to welcome Lucie from Handmade Sussex to lead this workshop. She brings warmth, artistry, and a deep love of nature to everything she creates. Growing up with the Sussex countryside on her doorstep, Lucie learned to forage from a young age before going on to study horticulture and flower arranging — a path that beautifully combines creativity and care for the natural world.
She crafts her stunning fresh and dried flower wreaths and decorations from organic blooms grown in her own flower field and foraged sustainably from the surrounding landscape. Her work celebrates the quiet beauty of the seasons and invites us to bring a touch of the wild into our homes, blending traditional craftsmanship with an enduring respect for nature.

What to expect
11am Sustainable foraging intro
Meet at the Horsebox Café for coffee, cake and a short introduction from Lucie about sustainable foraging.
Foraging for natural materials is about more than gathering — it’s about understanding the seasonal cycles, plant ecology, and how to work responsibly with what the land offers.
Lucie will share her knowledge of natural materials, explaining how to select them sustainably and how each contributes to the texture, colour, and structure of a wreath. You’ll gain insight into ethical harvesting, seasonal abundance, and how to bring the rich, earthy beauty of the West Sussex countryside into your home through thoughtful, nature-inspired design.
11.30am Foraging walk
Lucie will lead a 30-60 minute guided foraging walk around Westerlands, exploring the hedgerows in search of natural materials to add to your wreaths.
She believes that sustainable foraging is about more than collecting plants — it’s a way to deepen our connection to the land through mindful observation and seasonal awareness. As you wander through the winter landscape, Lucie will help you identify treasures such as seed heads, grasses, berries, and richly coloured foliage, highlighting their ecological roles and how to harvest them responsibly.
Her approach emphasises gentle, selective gathering, leaving plenty for wildlife and regeneration, and teaching you how to choose materials that will bring the textures, colours, and spirit of the countryside into your nature-inspired wreaths.
12.30pm Wreath making
Lucie will guide you in crafting a stunning wreath using a curated selection of seasonal materials she provides, and a few special finds from your foraging walk for a personal touch.
You’ll learn techniques for building a sturdy base and artfully layering autumnal foliage, grasses, berries, and seed heads, arranging them to highlight texture, colour, and seasonal character. Lucie’s expertise in horticulture, sustainable foraging, and natural design makes her teaching approachable and inspiring, helping every participant craft a wreath to take home that captures the rich tones, earthy textures, and gentle movement of the season as well as the memory of wandering hedgerows, discovering natural treasures, and sharing the experience with like-minded crafters.
Light farmhouse lunch
During the workshop, attendees can help themselves to a light farmhouse lunch featuring a selection of freshly baked quiches, hearty homemade soups, and vibrant seasonal salads.
The spread celebrates simple, wholesome ingredients—think flaky pastry filled with garden herbs and local cheese, steaming bowls of roasted vegetable or tomato basil soup, and colourful salads tossed with crisp greens, roasted roots, grains, and tangy dressings. Served buffet-style, it’s a relaxed meal that encourages a moment to pause and enjoy the flavours of the countryside at an appropriate moment during your wreath making.
3pm Finish
When everyone has finished crafting their wreath, we take a moment to celebrate the creativity that’s gone into each one.
It’s a lovely opportunity to admire the variety of styles and personal touches, and to share a few words about the inspiration behind each design. Before the day draws to a close, we capture the moment with some photos — a keepsake of a day spent in good company, surrounded by nature, creativity, and the scent of fresh foliage.
