The Women Shaping Westerlands’ Story

On International Women’s Day, we honour the women — past and present — who have tended this land, challenged convention, expanded its purpose, and helped build its future.

Florence Nagle: A Trailblazer Ahead of Her Time

Long before Westerlands became a regenerative farm, it was home to Florence Nagle — a formidable racehorse trainer, breeder, nature-lover, feminist and fearless challenger of the establishment.

Florence spent 20 years campaigning for equality for women trainers in horse racing, ultimately winning a legal battle that changed the rules of the sport. Her determination shaped British Racing and equine history — and her influence still underpins Westerlands’ values today.

Her spirit remains here: inspiring our horses’ free roaming, and self-selection Herb Café, and in the independence of this land. In the belief that true progress begins when someone is brave enough to say, “There must be a better way.”

Antonia Jamison: Reimagining the Future

Under the vision and leadership of Antonia Jamison, Westerlands has evolved from a stud farm into a self sustaining, not for profit regenerative farm and nature reserve, where biodiversity, access and community shape every decision.

Antonia leads with clarity, intuition, courage and entrepreneurial spirit. A woman’s woman, she listens, debates, gathers voices, and amplifies the expertise of those around her. Collaboration is her signature — and the estate is all the better for it.

Through her unwavering commitment and an empowered, innovative ‘Teal’ team around her, Westerlands has become a living blueprint for what a rural estate can become when it diversifies, works in an agile way and chooses purpose over precedent.

Pamela Jamison: Capturing the Soul of the Landscape

A gifted artist and poet, our beloved matriarch Pamela Jamison has spent decades observing her natural surroundings with a rare sensitivity.

Her new anthology, Unmapped Pathways, distils those observations into art — the changing light, the rhythm of the seasons, the stories and interactions that are carried quietly across the land in nature’s subtle cues. Signed copies are available from the Horsebox Café.

Emma Jamison: Interpreting the Natural World

A talented artist, Emma’s work brings a distinctive creative voice to the evolving story of Westerlands. A landscape painter deeply connected to the natural world, her art reflects the quiet beauty, changing light and seasonal rhythms that shape life here.

Through her paintings, Emma celebrates the landscapes of West Sussex, capturing not only the place itself but the feeling of being within it.

Emma’s paintings adorn the walls of Westerlands in cottages, through to some of our most impressive creative spaces: The Gathering Hall and The Waterlands Room. Transporting you into the great outdoors.

The Wild Collection: Women Leading the Way in Wellbeing

This year marks the launch of our Wild about Health collection — a suite of nature centred wellbeing experiences curated and led by inspirational women who are experts in their field.

We are proud to introduce Dr Rachel, whose unique blend of medical expertise and holistic practice guides our Healing in Nature Resets and 1-to-1 coaching — from hormonal and menopause support to sleep, energy and overall wellbeing.

From our WildSpa and WildSanctuary, to WildFit, WildFlow and WildGatherings, each strand has been crafted with restoration and healing in nature in mind.

Through WildRoots, Harriet from Foraged Hope and Libbie from Timbernook are nurturing The Good Gut Garden, a community led space where soil, biodiversity and human wellbeing grow side by side.

Our all female Equestrian team, led by Elly, delivers deeply impactful experiences including Quality Time with Horses, Pony Mornings, Equine Connection sessions and the transformational Changing Lives Through Horses programme — an alternative education pathway for homeschooled children, young people and adults seeking support, nature connection and confidence.

There is strength in community, and together, we want to grow a movement. A supportive, inclusive community to support the actions we’ve set out in our 20-year vision.

The Women Who Carry Westerlands, Every Day

Westerlands is held together by a collective of women: the ones tending the animals or land, welcoming guests with warmth, stewarding natural habitats, guiding workshops, washing, cleaning, maintaining the grounds, nurturing wellbeing, making coffees, running the accounts, cooking nourishing meals and keeping the estate’s pulse steady.

We celebrate the individuality of our team members — their sense of humour, skills, expertise, resilience and way of thinking. Together, they create a community defined not by hierarchy, but by collaboration. Not by titles, but by genuine contribution and camaraderie.

So, here’s to the Women of Westerlands

The trailblazers.
The visionaries.
The artists.
The quiet grafters.
The nature keepers.
The community builders.

Thank you for all you do. We are grateful for you.

Happy International Women’s Day.
